Performance of pipelines in elastic visco-plastic soils under long-term ground movements

Energy pipelines are constructed to transverse through different geological terrains. Sometime, they have to be buried at shallow depths in moving slopes, and therefore can be subjected to long-term ground movements. Permanent ground deformations along part of the pipeline length can cause pipe rupture. Thus, the effect of permanent ground deformations on buried pipelines can be critical for their integrity and safety. Understanding this effect is important for pipeline designers, which allows the engineers to continually assess the operation pipeline performance and make decision on necessary remediation. The success of such an endeavour hinges on the accurate knowledge of the pipeline-soil interaction in creeping soils.
