Creating intelligence in building automation systems requires focused research on integrating and interpreting currently disparate, large-scale, time-series, building energy and environmental data stored in both building systems and the Cloud. Using advanced data mining, an Intelligent Building Automation System (IBAS) can be developed to automatically extract and integrate relevant statistics from big energy data and enable active control of the automation systems to achieve a significant increase in the efficiency of energy management in any building. Further technological innovations in hardware, software and protocols are necessary to address the interoperability issues of new and legacy systems. Successful adoption of IBAS technologies in a construction project requires collaboration of all stakeholders, including architects, engineers, tradespeople, building owners and facility managers and with IBAS solution providers throughout the building's life.
