Climate change, and carbon dioxide's (CO2) leading role in it, are globally acknowledged problems. Mitigation strategies are being proposed in many fields, and construction industries must follow suit. Canadian concrete use is higher than any other construction material, and considerable CO2 emissions are one by-product of this. Global studies have examined partially replacing singular components of concrete mixes to reduce the environmental footprint - with most focusing on replacing aggregates with waste materials. However, since the use of Portland cement accounts for the majority of concrete's carbon footprint, alternative cementing technologies can have a large potential to greatly impact the sustainability of concrete.
