Toxicity Effects in Evacuation Modelling for the Safe Design of Canadian Infrastructure

An 18% increase in fire related injuries has been observed in Canada in the last five years. Smoke not fire itself**results in injury and casualty most times. Improper evacuation is also a factor in injury. There is, as a result,**pressure to create technologies that can be used to implement performance-based fire design solutions for**proper evacuation in the event of a fire. To achieve this, the potential effects of smoke on occupant evacuation**need to be correctly understood and then implemented into evacuation software. Jensen Hughes, the industry**partner, has a need for an improved understanding of smoke's effect on occupant egress times and a subsequent**need to develop modelling technologies for use in their design of Canadian built infrastructure. Our research**objective is to work with them to develop these technologies.
