The goal of this project is to produce, characterize and evaluate hydrochars obtained from the hydrothermal carbonization of bone meal as cost-effective materials to improve the rate of biological remediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soils in collaboration with Federated Cooperatives Limited (FCL). This project will generate new applied research knowledge in the area of advanced materials for environmental remediation obtained from biomass, and expand current understanding of the interactions between biological remediation and soil amendments. The knowledge gained from this project will provide FCL with in-depth understanding of key chemical and physical characteristics of novel materials to enhance the company's ongoing bioremediation efforts on hydrocarbon contaminated soils. This study will contribute to reducing the costs (currently over $40 billion) that Canadian companies and municipalities are currently facing related to site retirement obligations for approximately 30,000 brownfield sites across Canada.
