The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Centre for Oil Sands Sustainability (COSS), established in 2010, collaborates with industry to validate and optimize innovative technologies with the potential to enhance the environmental and economic performance of Canada's oil sands. COSS in collaboration with Pipeline Research Council International, TransCanada, and Enbridge will study the feasibility of solvent replacement for the current methods of sediment and water content determination in crude samples. This study includes extensive literature review to screen promising solvents, evaluation of alternative solvents to replace toluene used for the current centrifuge method for sediment and water determination of light and heavy crudes. The goal is to reduce the risks of prolonged exposure to toxic and hazardous solvents for frontline workers, decrease the disposal load of hazardous liquid waste, and reduce potential environmental contamination.
