Resource exploration and extraction is often associated with the disturbance of forested lands. One of the key factors to achieve successful reforestation is the nutritional quality of the topsoil. Poor soils may be treated with inorganic fertilizers, but this practice can encourage the growth of highly competitive non-native species and significantly slow down natural succession of native species. The objective of this study is to develop a nutritional "lunchbox" for tree seedlings based on alfalfa pellets to ensure out-planting success on industrial disturbed sites as well as to reduce unnecessary broadcast fertilizer application on public lands.
