Oil sands mining operations currently require water to separate the bitumen from the sand. The portion of water that is not recycled ends up in tailings ponds. Present day technologies are not able to achieve fast reclamation of oil sands tailings; as a result the tailings footprint is 10 times larger than 20 years ago. Rapid sedimentation would of tailings would enable increased water reuse, reclamation of the landscape, reduced operational risks and cost.
