Coke drums are critical components for high efficiency extraction of fuels from oil sands. The mechanical integrity of coke drums contributes to plant safety, extended service life, and production of greener energy. Suncor Oil Sands and In Situ has experienced recurring cases in which jagged cracking was discovered in the coke drum cladding where maintenance repair had been applied. A failure analysis has been conducted, but a root cause has not been identified, and the cracking appears to be more than a "failure analysis" case. This Engage project aims to investigate the metallurgy of the dissimilar cladding/repair alloy system, to understand the mechanism of cracking, and to develop research strategies for improved overlay design and practice.
