There is an emerging interest in the aerospace industry to manufacture structural components by randomly oriented strand carbon fiber reinforce polymer composites with compression molding. The objective of this Engage project is to development a finite element model of the randomly oriented strand composites and to calibrate the model with experimental data. The long-term objective is to predict the failure modes of real parts subject to external environmental loads. The engage program will form a strategic collaboration relationship between York University and Pratt & Whitney Canada in developing a design tool to design composite components with randomly oriented strand carbon fiber. This will fulfil the goal of Pratt & Whitney Canada's Mission as a world-class supplier in green manufacturing. In addition, this project will train three HQP in the related field and enhance the industrial partner's market competitiveness.
