Chlorine is currently the most widely used disinfectant in Canada. Residual chlorine is toxic to aquatic ecosystems and chlorinated by-products that form after chlorine disinfection have been shown to cause adverse health effects. There is a need for alternative chlorine-free disinfectants and peracetic acid is one of the main candidates. The goal of this research is to investigate and compare the performance of two Evonik peracetic acid products (PERACLEAN 15 and PERACLEAN 22) for disinfection of wastewater and inactivation of E. coli and enteric viruses (Coxsackievirus). The research will also investigate the sequential use of PAA with ultraviolet disinfection and its effect on the overall disinfection performance. In addition, changes in wastewater quality and residual PAA concentrations remaining in wastewater will be determined.
