The Toronto based company Safeguard Biosystems (SGBio) is developing a reusable platform for identifying bloodborne pathogenic bacteria. SGBio's unique molecular assay has the potential to replace the current standard of cell-culture based assays. Their approach offers a tremendous advantage in both reliability and efficiency of diagnosis. SGBio is collaborating with the Milstein Lab, at the University of Toronto, on the development of a Bioinformatics software platform and the construction of a diagnostic decision tree to incorporate into their device. The software will improve the effectiveness of their product by yielding a more accurate diagnosis as well as streamline the throughput of their product workflow. It will also help bring the product to market quicker with a reduced operating cost.
