This proposal addresses the creation of numerical models of oil sands resources over the more than one million hectare area of the McMurray Formation. These numerical models should be constrained by all available information. The key research challenge addressed by this research proposal is to consider supplementing the direct well observations with airborne geophysical observations. Although airborne geophysical measurements do not provide accurate or precise characterization of the oil sands bearing McMurray Formation, any additional information that guides development to areas of higher quality would have great value. The benefit will be improved mapping of resources over large areas that will lead to improved decisions related to development priorities and risk management. The innovative methodology developed in this proposal could be repeated as additional well and geophysical data becomes available. A clear picture of the subsurface for profitable and sustainable development will emerge. Petrel Robertson Consulting Ltd. will have an enhanced offering of data and information for its clients. The use of these research results will benefit Canada by promoting development of the best resources and discouraging development of marginal resources.
