The inclusion of sophisticated computing devices, numerous sensors, geo-localization tools, and wireless capabilities in vehicles, has largely been targeted towards addressing transportation issues such as vehicle safety and highway congestion. These capabilities constitute, however, a phenomenal ubiquitous platform which is mobile, can sense, compute, store data and communicate at virtually no extra infrastructure deployment cost. In fact, vehicles could be seen as mobile micro-data centers which can provide services to users or service providers. Conversely, with the advent of cloud computing, vehicles could benefit from services on-demand, by leveraging elastic resources available in the cloud to cater smart functionality for passengers, beyond those embedded in their on-board systems.
The objective of this research program is to design new architectures, tools, and algorithms to enable the concept of vehicular cloud computing.
Three PhD and three MSc students will receive training in this research program. They will acquire advanced knowledge in communication networks, vehicular networking, and new wireless communication techniques and protocols. The skills developed by the students will be in high demand with the growing popularity of on-board connected services and applications.
