Enabling service provisioning based on mobile users generated content in next generation networks

Handheld devices, such as smart phones, can nowadays connect through multiple communication networks. They also are capable of finding their location, sensing the environment, identifying radio frequency identification tags, and taking images or video. Sensing and communication capabilities of these new generations of wireless devices, together with their geospatial capabilities enable to build a whole new host of novel services that employ user-generated content, combining sensed and input data. In this research program, we target scenarios where heterogeneous multimodal data are generated at the user level - possibly via a wireless smart phone - and reported to outside networks for further processing, aggregation or service composition. We will develop novel architectural models, protocols, and algorithms to enable services based on mobile users' generated content in next generation networks. Users are seen as active content generators and also mobile carriers of opportunistic sensing infrastructures. We will design efficient approaches for multimodal content acquisition. We will research novel networking architectures and protocols for the efficient transmission of user-generated content, and we will also design tools and architectural models to integrate services based on mobile users generated content with standard next generation communication systems, namely the IP Multimedia Subsystem.
