A super-resolving linear optical microscope

The funding will allow us to build a microscope with a resolution far beyond Rayleigh's (diffraction) limit. The construction and successful testing of this instrument will yield a revolutionary superresolving imaging technique. Contrary to existing superresolving techniques, our method does not resort to nonlinear-optical or near-field methods. Furthermore, while reliant on quantum optical principles, it does not require any nonclassical light sources and hence can be used with objects that are not directly accessible, such as astronomical objects. The method to be developed has a potential to change the faces of several fields of science, including astronomy, biology, medicine and nanotechnology, as well as optomechanical industry. In this way, it can be expected to be of direct economic, human and academic benefit to Canada.
