The field of quantum optics has now reached the point where we can construct complex entangled systems while maintaining control over their individual components. This offers unprecedented opportunities for fundamental studies of nature, and also leads to a whole new generation of technology with a qualitatively new range of capabilities. This includes measurement instruments of extraordinary sensitivity, exponentially faster computers, information-theoretically secure communication systems, and quantum-controlled chemistry.
