The general vision of my research is implementing light as the principal physical medium for quantum information processing. This requires overcoming a number of challenges: in particular, developing the techniques of storing the quantum information carried by light and arranging controlled interaction of microscopic optical states with each other. These tasks can be solved by interfacing the quantum light fields with another quantum object, cold atomic ensembles, in settings involving high-finnesse optical cavities and tapered optical nanofibers. If successful, the planned research will have a vast range of applications ranging from secure communication channels and ultraprecise measurements to conceptually novel microscopy for biological purposes.
