Kruger is presently producing nano-cellulose filaments (CF) in its Trois-Rivières mill, Qc. In general, this type of material has extremely high tensile strength compared to traditional fibers made of polypropylene or polyester. They are hydrophilic and have also high length-to-diameter ratio (aspect ratio), making them efficient in stabilizing cracks when inserted in a composite material matrix. The incorporation of CF into a concrete matrix can potentially provide a good balance between the mechanical and the durability properties, and sustainable development.The overall objective of this program is to develop nano fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) structured using CF with mechanical performance and durability comparable to those offered by concrete synthetic fibers (steel, polypropylene or glass) with, moreover, a lower cost, reduced environmental footprint and economic importance to Canada. In the present project, CF produced by Kruger will be investigated for potential application in FRC.
