OMTEC Inc has established a leadership position in Canada as a supplier of wheat straw for applications inthermoplastic composites. The company is Canadian based and owned. The company has plans to extend itsmanufacturing plant in Ontario to produce cellulose press boards. This research project will investigate theutilization of natural fibers in the manufacturing of press boards for application in high voltage insulators.This research will provide knowledge required to scale up and determination of manufacturing conditions on acommercial scale. The research carried out at the University of Waterloo will focus on selection of straw fiberparameters, formulation and press conditions to allow OMTEC to evaluate the conditions required to scale upthe manufacturing of press boards in Canada.
