Single-serve coffee brewers and related accessories (cups, pods, and cartridges that hold the coffee grounds) are considered one of the most disruptive innovations to hit the coffee manufacturing and broader food service industries. These technologies provide consumers low cost access to a broad range of traditional, premium, and specialty coffee blends at the touch of a button, whether they are visiting a food services establishment or are in the comfort of their own homes. However, this convenience comes at a significant environmental cost as millions of pounds of "pod" trash enters North American landfills each year. The vast majority of plastic coffee pods currently on the market are not recyclable and none are compostable.
