Motivated by the need to find feasible paths toward low-carbon energy systems, we propose to design andfabricate new materials with controlled micro- and nano-structures simulating the interfaces in conventionalfuel cell catalysts. Moreover, we propose to develop new methods to interrogate and discern the impact oftransport processes at individual interfaces on overall performance. Finally, we propose to link and translatethese efforts into new metrics for prescriptive catalyst design, quality control protocols, and industrial standardsacross the relevant value chains in Canada.
