Radiometric compensation is the correction of a projected image to compensate for surface color, texture,reflectivity, and surrounding effects and influences from the environment. Such compensation has applicationfor customers who develop any number of complex, non-flat-screen installations, for which example use casesinclude domes, such as planetariums or other attractions, projection mappings onto three dimensional objects,projecting onto non-traditional "screens" (such as buildings and other large surfaces, whether flat or not), andin projector stacking, where multiple projectors are overlaid, typically for reasons of brightness enhancement.For our industrial partner, a significant fraction of their customers do operate projectors in complexconfigurations, and more would do so if the tools to enable such configurations were available. At the presenttime, simple configurations are addressed with rudimentary tools such as background subtraction, howeverthere is presently no solution for generalized installations, although there is significant demand and marketopportunity. As a result, in the absence of an effective radiometric-compensation tool, customers are either notpursuing their creative, challenging ideas at all, or are having to accept inferior imaging for the viewer.
