The current CRD grant application targets a two years collaborative effort in between McGill University and ITF technologies towards the development of improved specialty laser sources that will benefit the Canadian industry. The first topic consists in reducing the optical noise on a low duty-cycle fiber laser for LIDAR applications. The second topic consists in increasing the output power of a high-power fiber laser for manufacturing processes. Both partners bring their own complementary expertise on the fabrication of fiber lasers and supporting materials for the success of the project. In addition to their technical and financial contributions, the industrial partners at ITF Technologies are well aware of the needs of the laser market and thus provide important feedback on the orientation of the project. At McGill University, this project will position the research effort at the forefront of fiber laser market needs, thus with high potential for intellectual property and training students with unique expertise. Two MEng students, two BEng research students and two part-time PhD students will be trained in the context of the project, leading to highly qualified personnel specialized in fiber laser technologies.
