The current CRD grant application targets a four-year collaborative effort between McGill University and ITF Technologies towards the development of improved specialty laser sources that will benefit Canadian industry. The project consists in increasing the output power of high-power fiber lasers for manufacturing processes. Piercing, welding, cutting are such tasks of high-power lasers. Increasing the power of these lasers enables reducing time for e.g. cutting a given shape from a bulk piece of metal. This therefore increases processing speed and productivity. Both partners bring their own complementary expertise on the fabrication of fiber lasers and supporting materials for the success of the project. In addition to their technical and financial contributions, the industrial partners at ITF Technologies are well aware of the needs of the laser market and thus provide important feedback on the orientation of the project. At McGill University, this project will position the research effort at the forefront of fiber laser market needs, thus with high potential for the creation of intellectual property and training students with unique expertise. A PhD and an MEng student will be trained in the context of the project, leading to highly qualified personnel specialized in fiber laser technologies.
