The requested equipment will be used to support the NSERC Discovery programs of Professors M. Rochette and L. Chen at McGill University, Y. A. Peter at école Polytechnique, and Y. Messaddeq at Laval University. The equipment consists of a unique optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) operating in the wavelength range of 1.5-3.4 um in the mid-infrared. This OSA has only recently become commercially available, with unprecedented features of broad spectral bandwidth, long-wavelength reach, ultrahigh sensitivity and high spectral resolution. The mid-infrared OSA is readily required as the team has covered the theoretical background and possess the complementary equipment to perform original and high level experiments on mid-infrared optical sources (M. Rochette), dual-band fiber lasers (L. Chen), specialty fiber characterization (Y. Messaddeq), and micro-resonators characterization (Y. A. Peter). Training HQP in the quickly evolving field of mid-infrared photonics is of prime importance and the use of this unique OSA will bring an entirely new range of skillsets. As a group, we expect in a short term that the mid-infrared OSA will impact the research of 14 graduate students (6 in M. Rochette’s group, 4 in L. Chen’s group, 2 in Y.A. Peter’s group, and 2 in Y. Messaddeq’s group). In the next 5 years, we expect that in itself, this successful grant application will contribute to the training of more than 20 graduate students in addition to expanding our expertise in mid-infrared photonics and thus gain momentum in this research area.
