This program is targeted towards industries which employ image analysis technologies for healthcare. It falls under the NSERC CREATE mandate to train highly qualified students and PDFs -- personnel who will feed and grow this industry in Quebec and Canada. It does so by taking advantage of the fact that many of these companies are already engaged in active collaborations with the applicants. Trainees in this program will receive advanced training in medical image acquisition and analysis, signal processing, computer vision and biomedical imaging. They will be able to enter the program from any of the founding sites (McGill, ETS, U. Sherbrooke) but will spend two rotations elsewhere; at least one of which will be in the industrial sector. This CREATE program will offer its trainees the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment and observe the direct impact of their research on problems that are immediately relevant to the society in which they live. Upon completion, these individuals will have acquired expertise in image processing, medical imaging, mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, machine learning and software engineering. In addition to the industrial and academic career opportunities in medical imaging research, graduates of the program will be highly qualified to work in the wider domains of computer vision, imaging and signal processing. Industry too will benefit, as this collaboration will provide scientists and engineers at our partner industries the opportunity to participate directly in academic research, greatly speeding up the dissemination of knowledge and the transfer of the resulting technologies. In addition to the possibility of growth and development within industry, this expertise can lead to new innovations in other areas of medical imaging and biotechnology, among the fastest growing segments of the Canadian economy. Few integrated programs presently exist to provide comprehensive training in medical image analysis and acquisition, making this CREATE program particularly novel and timely.
