Modern communications systems and networks are susceptible to widespread security threats, particularly attacks targeting the communications infrastructure as well as identity, privacy and data confidentiality of ordinary information and communications technology (ICT) users. However, current communications system architecture and protocols for security provisioning and privacy protection have evolved with fundamental vulnerabilities. Due to the explosive expansion of ICT industy, new communications technologies as well as their ethical and legal aspects in communications security and privacy have not been fully addressed. This is particularly true for emerging ICT applications such as cloud computing, e-health and smart grid. The main goal of this proposed NSERC CREATE Program in Communications Security, Privacy and Cyberethics is to provide Canadian Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) with the up-to-date technical knowledge, immediate job readiness and life-long professional skills that address the existing and future needs of the dynamic ICT industry. Our CREATE team will be able to achieve this ambitious goal through close interaction with industry and international research community, collaborative training and technology innovation, and by addressing multi-faceted nature of communications security and privacy protection. The proposed NSERC CREATE program is built upon the collective expertise of our multi-disciplinary team, which encompasses wireless communications, software engineering, computer science, healthcare, psychology, law and business. This program is supported by our extensive partnerships with industry, academia, and government laboratories as well as by previous research investments at the University of Western Ontario and other partipating institutions. The integrated multidisciplinary expertise and research facilities provide unparalleled environment for the proposed secure communications technology development, HQP training, and technology innovation.
