Oxide materials, Oxide-based Interfaces and Heterostructures: the search for novel states of matterThe proposed research will explore oxide materials and complex structures based on oxides that present physical properties influenced by the strong electronic interactions. All the projects involve the growth of oxide thin films as monolayers or heterostructures (multilayers) made of several materials. We will create new structures designed to entwine the electronic phases of these various oxides and study their competition, their coexistence and even their cooperation in the emergence of novel electronic states of matter. In summary, the projects will focus on: 1) heterostructures between high temperature superconductors and various oxides; 2) Josephson junctions between electron-doped cuprate high temperature superconductors and conventional superconductors to probe the still unknown origin of superconductivity in cuprates; 3) multiferroic materials combining ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity. These projects will help deepen our understanding of emerging novel electronic phases of matter due to strong electron-electron interactions in oxides and interfaces between these oxides. Several projects could also contribute to the development of a new expertise in the fabrication and design of devices for potential applications in the fields of nanotechnology, electronics, telecommunications, medical science, security and energy transport and storage.
