Effective planning, monitoring and control are crucial to the competitiveness of Canadian manufacturing industry. This research program aims to enhance these closely related activities. Our direct objectives are to tackle six interdependent projects: (1) integrated and interactive plant- and machine-level planning; (2) integrated product modularization and manufacturing resource reconfiguration; (3) localized multi-feature extraction; (4) hybrid feature fusion for fault diagnosis, condition prediction and fault-chain discovery; (5) planning-goal guided and condition-based control; and (6) integration of control and monitoring functionalities. This research program is a substantial extension of our previous studies in these areas. The long-term objectives are to continue our efforts in knowledge creation and technology innovation for effective planning, monitoring and control in manufacturing and other industrial sectors. Both the long and short-term objectives of this research program are directly aligned with two of the NSERC strategic target areas, i.e., Competitive Manufacturing, and Safety and Security. The expected outcomes of the proposed program include multi-level models and efficient algorithms for planning integration, practical methods for concurrent product modularization and manufacturing resource reconfiguration, viable techniques for multi-task fault detection and prediction in a dynamic environment, goal-guided and condition-based control schemes for shop floor dynamics handling, and integrated control-monitoring techniques for fault confinement and in-process failure avoidance. These results will lead to significant knowledge advancements in planning, monitoring and control. It is expected that new methods and techniques will be transferred to Canadian manufacturing, energy, defense and transportation industries. Highly qualified personnel will be trained to meet future challenges.
