Methodologies for Biomedical Signal Processing and Control

The purpose of my research program is to develop novel patient monitoring technologies using advanced engineering techniques for processing of biological signals and to develop automatic drug delivery systems using control engineering. In this proposal, I will a) use advanced bio-signal processing concepts to develop techniques to characterize and monitor signals from the central and autonomous nervous systems. The purpose of these techniques is to aid healthcare providers in the observation of sleep -wake cycles, assessment of stress and reactivity, detection and prediction of epileptic seizure, and for patient monitoring in critical care; b) building upon the Phone Oximeter previously developed by my team, I will develop energy-aware and computationally thrifty signal processing methods for mobile health. For instance, compressed sensing methods which allow the entire signal to be determined from relatively few measurements will be used to develop simple mobile phone based technologies to monitor and diagnose patients in community settings; c) developadvanced control methodsthat will form the basis for the first provably safe, and FDA and Health Canada certifiable closed-loop controller for anesthesia and analgesia.
