A wide diversity of nutrient regulations exists throughout the world. The question arose which are the mostefficient nutrient regulation structures to protect environmental and human health. For this, a modelling studywill be developed to better understand the interactions between nutrient regulations and environmentalprotection. It will be used to investigate which regulations can stimulate innovation in the wastewater industryand which likely inhibit innovation and lead to excessive conservatism and cost. The gained knowledge willhelp HDR Inc., the industrial partner of this project, to better mediate in permit negotiations betweenmunicipalities and regulators regarding wastewater treatment infrastructure and promote innovative solutions.
