项目摘要

This project aims to advance the field of integrated water quantity and quality modelling to better describe wastewater pollution emission to receiving waters and the operational cost allocated to wastewater transport and treatment. The gained knowledge will help prioritize between possible actions - operational changes or investment in infrastructure - for pollution abatement and cost reduction. The model to be developed covers the generation of wastewater from municipalities, its transport in separate and combined sewers for subsequent treatment, the different treatment steps at a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the emission of pollutants into the receiving waters through sewer overflows or treated effluent. Particular emphasis is given to understand and describe the transport, dynamics, composition and fate of solids in sewers and the corresponding implications for managing and operating the sewer and WWTP infrastructure. Synergistically, a new comprehensive data input model - influent generator - will be constructed that is able to reproduce the generation of wastewater at municipalities of various size combined with the processes happening in the sewershed. This influent generator will combine all the knowledge that is gathered from the integrated model into an easy-to-use tool which can be employed for better, i.e. enhanced treatment performance at lower cost, and faster WWTP design. The integrated model and its various submodels will be thoroughly verified against case-study data at city catchment scale. The MOSAIQUE project is part of Suez Treatment Technologies Canada's growth plan. Its results will allow targeting Canadian and international municipal markets for improving the management of urban wastewaters based on water quality data and model-based design of advanced treatment facilities. This represents a major growth potential for the company whose activities currently focus mainly on the market of wastewater treatment facilities using traditional approaches. Successful commercialization would therefore be associated to potential short-term job creation in Canada.
