The Laboratory for Acoustics and Vibration Analysis (LAVA), at École Polytechnique de Montréal, andComtek, a Canadian company based in Burlington, are combining their expertise to develop new solutions forsound attenuation in sandwich floor panels used in regional and business jets. Composite floor panels are madeof lightweight core sandwiched between two thin skins having high tensile stiffness. Such design leads to lightstructures with exceptional flexural properties. However, the lightness of the panels facilitate the propagationof the acoustic and mechanical vibration causing passenger discomfort, and failure of electronic systems.Sound attenuation in such sandwich structures can be achieved through modification of the constructionparameters such as thickness, density of the core and/or the skin. Moreover a good scientific understanding ofthe sound attenuation mechanism is needed to correlate experimental measurements.In this collaborative project, an analytical model will be created to predict the acoustic properties of compositesandwich panels. The main purpose is to investigate and understand the relationship between the physicalparameters of the panels and the sound transmission loss (STL). Thus, a range of parameters known to improveacoustic properties such as the core shear modulus and the density of the core will be used as inputs to themodel. Experimental data collected from a previous Engage project will be used to validate the model. Such acombined approach will provide Comtek with valuable design tool to develop custom made floor panels withenhanced acoustic properties for the aeronautic industry.
