Ensuring a reliable, efficient energy supply through the provision to the market of of heavy duty gas turbines, aero derivative gas turbines and industrial gas turbines is the aim of Siemens Canada Limited (PowerGeneration , Distributed Generation, Aeroderivative Gas turbine). The next generation of engines will need tocomply with increasingly stringent pollutant emissions legislation not only for high methane natural gas butalso for a wide range of fuel compositions encompassing higher hydrocarbons and inert gases. The capabilityto operate on liquid fuel either for emergency backup of for full baseload operation is also mandatory for manyapplications. These requirements impose significant technical and modeling challenges for the combustionsystem development. This project aims to enhance our ability to develop clean combustion technology. Improvements in pollutantemissions requires improved mixing to ensure a more complete combustion of the fuel and air mixture.Effective mixing of the fuel with air has the potential for reducing NOx emissions, yet current understanding ofthe mixing process is incomplete and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling is not yet able tomodel the complete physical process. This project is a continuation of the original project studying a simplifiedmodel of the mixing chamber to improve understanding of the physical mixing processes and improveunderstanding of the limitations in the current CFD models of the mixing processes.
