RAYSECUR is a Canadian company specialized in the design and production of terahertz imaging systems forsecurity applications. In order to upgrade RAYSECURs existing systems and develop new ones companyneeds a terahertz source with higher frequency and higher power.Classical vacuum electronic devices (VED) such as klystrons and traveling wave tubes (TWT) have beendeveloped and used for many decades for RF generations from kHz to GHz band. In order to push VEDs intothe THz band, the size of the VED EM circuit must be scaled down that the transverse circuit dimensionsshould be less than a millimeter. Fabrication of the VEDs with such a small feature was not possible untilrecently but with development of highly accurate microfabrication techniques, an opportunity for THz VEDshas emerged.In the frame of ENGAGE grant we will:-Review classical VEDs and evaluate them from the point of view of scaling down to the THz band. -Buildconceptual numerical models of VEDs suitable for the THz generation.-Perform preliminary analysis of microfabrication tools needed to fabricate typical THz VEDs.The project will help an innovative Canadian company to start an ambitious R&D in order to develop a novelCanadian THz sources. This will consolidate the position of Canada as a world leader in the terahertz research.
