The ability to image and record cellular processes in living animals represents one of the most powerfulapproaches in biological research. A variety of protein based optical indicators or "biosensors" have been usedto report cellular processes in cultured cells. However, imaging these biosensors in live animals hastraditionally been challenging, requiring costly transgenic animals and specialized microscopy equipment.These obstacles can be overcome with the recent development of affordable fiber-optic imaging systems,together with improved genetically-engineered biosensors and viral delivery methods. This Engage proposalaims to develop a novel fiber-optic photon counting system that would provide an affordable tool for recordingbiosensor emissions in live animals.
