The aim of this project is to offer a cost-effective strategy for attaching proteins to glass and plastic substrates (the main substratesthat SQI Diagnostics currently uses) that are stable, functional and properly bond to the substrates. This project will have threemain steps toward reaching this goal: (A) Surface functionalization, (B) Protein immobilization and (C) Bio-functionalityassessment.We propose to investigate several functional chemistries on the surfaces for stable and covalent attachment of biomolecules. Wealso propose several methods for the immobilization of biomolecules onto the surfaces such as conventional liquid phase coatingas well as automated printings for immobilizing SQI's desired biomolecules. As controls, we will also investigate physicalpatterning of the biomolecules on the surface without covalent attachment as well as using the same functional surfaces that thecompany is currently using. To demonstrate the bio-functionality, the coatings will be optimized using the currently availablebioassays at SQI.
