英文摘要
The proposed project aims to investigate a novel grating coupler structure for efficient polarization andwavelength independent fiber-to-waveguide coupling. Grating couplers are widely used as input/output portsthat provide the optical interfaces between optical fibers and the photonics circuit. The commercialfiber-to-planar waveguide grating couplers are both polarization and wavelength dependent. The proposedresearch project first involves extensive numerical design of a grating coupler that potentially offers both thepolarization and wavelength independence features. Dr. Winnie Ye's research group will team up with thetechnical group of Optiwave, who will provide technical support for their specialized three-dimensionalOptiFDTD and OptiSpice software for the simulation needs. Rigorous simulations of the device design will becarried out to obtain the most optimal design parameters and device performance, followed by design masklayout creation. The research team plans to fabricate the prototype device in the near future to facilitate thevalidation of the accuracy and effectiveness of the Optiwave Photonic Software. If successful, this joint projectwill provide a versatile grating coupler for general use in silicon photonic circuits.
