英文摘要
Optical amplifiers are critical for boosting the power of high-speed optical signals in data communicationssystems. However, as the size of optical transceiver modules continuously shrinks to increase the overallcapacity of networks, current optical amplifier technology, based on erbium-doped optical fiber, will no longersatisfy the size constraints of the system. For future high-speed communications systems a new technologyplatform for very small form factor (VSFF) amplification is required. In this project my research team and Iwill build on our expertise in compact, integrated erbium-ytterbium-doped waveguide amplifiers to provide aVSFF amplification solution together with industry partner Lumentum. Lumentum is a world leader in opticalamplifier technology and is seeking solutions for the next generation of its pluggable transceiver technology.Integrated erbium-ytterbium amplifiers can be fabricated with ultra-compact size and at low cost on siliconchips. Therefore, this project will enable Lumentum to leap forward on their optical amplifier roadmap andsignificantly increase their competitive advantage. Furthermore, it will lead to new knowledge about theminimum size, output power limitations, gain, signal polarization dependency and overall design andperformance of integrated erbium-ytterbium optical amplifiers.
