The Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, is an important aquaculture species and Planet Shrimp Inc.,our industry partner, is operating the largest indoor shrimp aquaculture facility in Canada (260,000 square footstate of the art facility). With the implementation of several innovative aquaculture approaches, Planet ShrimpInc. has the potential to disrupt inland aquaculture practices and become the premier shrimp aquaculture hub inCanada. We propose to use plant based terpenoid compounds as a feed supplement to enhance and promoteshrimp reproduction. Research performed as part of this project will provide preliminary data on this novelapproach in that it will 1) identify target compounds suitable for this approach and 2) provide data on theeffectiveness of dietary sources of these compounds on reproduction. Specifically, a benchmark analysis ofreproduction in treated shrimp will allow the comparison of this approach with the common industry practiceof eyestalk ablation (ESA. Ontario provides a unique opportunity for growth and development of inlandaquaculture with the large array of potential markets for shrimp produced in proximity of markets. Moreover, this project provides input into a large scale inland shrimp culturing industry at a time, when basic technologiesare being developed with the potential to be implemented world wide.
