Machining is a critical part of manufacturing airframe parts, but productivity of these processes is limited bythe high flexibility of the workpiece, which may cause vibrations, dynamic deflections, and chatter and lead topoor surface finish and damage to the workpiece or the machine tool. This project aims to minimize themachining time of some thin-walled aluminum airframe components without causing chatter or violating thesurface finish and dimensional tolerances.UVic's Advanced Manufacturing (UVICAM) laboratory will adapt tool selection, spindle speed selection,feedrate scheduling, and toolpath planning strategies as well as High Speed Machining technology for themilling process of three airframe parts that are being produced at Viking Air's North Saanich plant. Chatter freeparameters will be identified by implementing the newly developed Finite Strip Modeling method, and byconducting impact hammer tests on the workpiece. The objective is to enhance the developed modelingapproach to solve important industrial problems, also to verify the efficiency of this novel technology inincreasing the productivity of Canadian manufacturing industry.
