Phytocannabinoids have received considerable attention due to their potential as therapeutic agents for a widevariety of ailments. Although they are naturally occurring, CMH Biotechnologies Inc. has patented the processof biocatalysis of cannabinoids using single-celled organisms, thereby producing large amounts of thesecannabinoids in relatively high purity, which can be used for analytical reference materials and aspharmaceutical grade cannabinoids. The biosynthesis has been observed to be non-specific with many minorcannabinoids being produced. The purpose of this Engage grant is to evaluate the structures of these low-levelmetabolites being produced in the biosynthetic pathways and establish whether they are naturally occurring ornovel compounds with potential therapeutic activity. This partnership will combine biotechnology andadvanced analytical chemistry for a better understanding of the impacts on cannabinoid biocatalysis.
