This project involves the testing, development and demonstration of equipment for monitoring subsurface gasmigration and methane emissions from oil and natural gas wells. During the project a shallow (~10m deep)controlled release of methane will be conducted into the soil typical of the Western Canadian Sedimentarybasin to provide a platform for the testing of sensors and field-deployable analytical technologies for methaneemissions detection and quantification. As we will be able to control leakage rates and duration, we will beable to demonstrate and assess the sensitivity of Eosense`s battery powered, passive methane sensor which canbe deployed in the field to detect and quantify methane efflux at ground surface, in comparison to establishedUBC-owned instrumentation that does require a power supply. If proven effective such a sensor could bewidely employed in the oil and gas industry (in Canada and abroad) to monitor for methane leakage and gasmigration.
