Martec Limited is a Halifax-based engineering consulting company. Martec's computational system, Trident, isused to analyse components for naval ships and the response of these systems to blast, underwater shock andimpact events. The proposed NSERC Engage grant focuses on the numerical model for materials widely usedin naval vessels. The computational models used to describe the behaviour of the materials require mechanicalproperties determined through fundamental experiments. In addition to these material parameters, theseexperiments also provide insights into material failure, which are crucial to the development of the numericalmodels. In this proposal, we are requesting funds to support a study of the dynamic compression of naval steel(HY80) that will yield both mechanical property and failure information that will be applied to develop andvalidate computational models utilized at Martec in their analyses. We will accomplish this objective through aseries of testing and characterization, and application of results. These tasks are primarily being completed byan MSc student, for which funding is being requested for his salary and experimental activities. Through thisresearch, we will develop a robust framework for understanding and assessing the failure of the materials usedin naval structures. Our ability to understand and predict failure through the use of numerical simulations willultimately result in the development of improved materials and protection products by Martec and Canadianpartners. This submission builds off a relationship developed during a visit to Martec in February 2017, whichwas supported by a Connect Grant.
