With exponential growth in internet traffic data centers require wider band width interfaces at affordable powerto keep cooling energy cost low and to be environment friendly. Consequently, many hardware challenges mustbe resolved to enable 100+ Gb/s interface by 2020. One of the key challenges is higher speed Analog to digitalconverters (ADC) that must provide higher resolution within acceptable thermal limits. This engage proposalexplores some of those options in close collaboration with Microsemi Inc. located in Vancouver, Canada.Instead of taking a traditional approach to rely on technology to improve the power efficiency, here we arelooking at a novel architectural innovation to improve the information efficiency of the conversion process andachieve 32 GS/s Analog to Digital Converter within 350 mW power consumption.
