L'Alliance Boviteq (known as SEMEX) provides genetic resources to cattle farmers through fresh andcryopreserved semen, and believes that the post-thaw recovery using present cryopreservation techniques playsa critical role in bull semen provider choice. Industry standard bull sperm cryopreservation protocols yieldapproximately 65% viable sperm, reducing efficiency compared to natural bred heiffers. Thus, in addition towithin-market competition, there is a pressing market-based need for improved cryopreservation protocols toincrease post-thaw recovery and its associated return on investment. Here we propose to explore optimalcryopreservation media by combining novel biophysical and biochemical tools with mathematical modeling toimprove two major parts of a semen cryopreservation protocol with the long term goal of improved post thawfertility of bull semen.
