New technologies that improve sustainability are increasingly important given our current global economic and environmental challenges. This CRC is focused on two aspects of Aqueous Metals Processing to provide such technologies. Firstly, metals such as nickel and copper are used ubiquitously and represent a large part of Canada's economy, but the current extraction and processing technologies for these metals are not sustainable in the long term due to increasingly marginal ore-bodies that contain high concentrations of toxic elements such as arsenic and antimony. This Chair will investigate new aqueous atmospheric temperature and pressure processing technologies to ensure sustainable production of these important metals. Secondly, aqueous molybdenum and molybdenum alloy deposition processes will be investigated to improve performance and reduce costs in several areas of technological importance, such as in the manufacturing of thin film solar cells and the coating of parts for oil and gas service.
