Demand for common metals such as copper and zinc is increasing exponentially due to their ubiquitous use in everyday technology. For example, copper production has increased at a compound rate of 3% per annum since 1850. To meet the demand for increasing consumption, mining and extraction companies will have to exploit more marginal mineral deposits in the future. Current extraction technologies for such deposits are limited by cost, performance, legal and environmental considerations: the extraction industry is at a crossroads. This renewal of the Canada Research Chair in Aqueous Processing of Metals will continue the development of ground-breaking water-based technologies for metal extraction.
