Cellular therapy could reduce health care costs by providing long-lasting treatments to degenerative diseases such as diabetes. The production of cells for transplantation at clinical scale will require the design of novel bioreactors. Efficient stem cell differentiation into functional cells may require signals from a 3D cell culture environment. The objective of the proposed research is to develop bioprocesses to produce therapeutic cells at clinical scale using 3D cell culture. Innovative manufacturing methods such as 3D printing of the biomaterials and cells will help overcome scale-up challenges such as producing organized 3D constructs and supplying oxygen to the cells.
